ABSTRACT: The trace amounts of antimony and arsenic occur in surface water and groundwater. There are very strict limited values of these toxic elements in drinking water (5 μg·l-1 for antimony and 10 μg·l-1 for arsenic). The results of arsenic and antimony distribution at the Poproč abandoned deposit are introduced in the article. This mining area belongs to the important ore deposits in the south part of Slovak Ore Mountains. The mining water from Agnes mine adit with high concentrations of arsenic (2 400 μg·l-1) and antimony (600 μg·l-1) represents important source of contamination in this locality. The highest content of Sb (750 μg·l-1) was detected in the Anna adit outflow. A failed tailing pond above Poproč village is also one of the contaminating sources, where 400 μg·l-1 of antimony and 1 950 μg·l-1 of arsenic were determined in the percolating water. High levels of aluminium, nickel and zinc were registered as well. High concentrations of Sb (1 000 μg·l-1), Al, Ni, Zn and Co were detected in PO-1 borehole below the tailing pond. In spite of flow dilution effect, the surface water flowing directly through the village, but also in the lower reaches of a stream contents high concentrations of arsenic and antimony.
