ABSTRACT: The Ľubietová deposit was in the 15th and 16th century one of the most important and most extensively exploited Cu mines in Europe. Although mining activities were stopped during the 19th century and only a few geological survey activities with negligible effect have been carried out here since that time, the area remains substantially affected. The article presents results of the environmental study in the Ľubietová mining area. The metal content in the groundwater, surface water and in the drainage water was studied in the dry as well as during the rainy seasons. The neutralisation potential (NP), total acidity production (TAP), net neutralisation potential (NNP) study enable express assumption that the AMD (acid main drainage) formation is not probable. The ability to precipitate copper from the drainage water on the surface of iron objects as well as the effectiveness of the reaction material (Fe0) in the decontamination of the water with the trace elements content were studied. The surface water (and drainage water) as well as the groundwater are substantially contaminated predominantly by copper, iron and arsenic. Coming out from study results very limited AMD production is assumed at localities Reiner and Podlipa and the environmental risk is negligible. The ability to precipitate cementation copper from the drainage water on the iron surface gives the possibility to realize Fe0-barrier for elimination of metals from the drainage water.
