ABSTRACT: The gravel pits around Bratislava not only have an aesthetic and urban, but also a recreational function. Genetically, the water in gravel pits is the groundwater replenished by the river Danube. Open water table areas are in a direct contact with the air and acquire some characteristics of the surface water. The gravel pit water is regularly evaluated using the standards for the Classification of surface water quality. The quality of open water table is much more susceptible to pollution than that of groundwater. Wet and dry depositions, water inflows from the surrounding surfaces, unmanageable outlets of sewerage water, some solid and liquid wastes, but also waterfowl contribute to its pollution. The Department of Hydrogeology has been monitoring the water quality in seven gravel pits (Čuňovo, Rusovce, Draždiak, Štrkovec, Kuchajda, Zlaté Piesky, Vajnory) since 1976. With regard to the oxygen cycle, the water quality in gravel pits is very good. The anthropogenic effects on the water quality of the gravel pits are shown through elevated levels of sulfates and chlorides in the water. These effects are most visible in the gravel pit Vajnory, which are likely caused by the industrial activity that took place in Vajnory area in the past. From the long-term observations it is apparent though that the water quality of the gravel pits is continuously improving, with reduced concentrations of sulfates, chlorides, and nitrates detected in the water. The main microbiological parameters were favorable during this observation period, mostly the first class quality and indicated relatively good water quality of the gravel pits in surroundings of Bratislava.
