ABSTRACT: Set of 259 analyses of geothermal water samples was evaluated. The samples were collected during years 1952 - 1980 w ithin the hydrocarbon prospection of the Danube basin. Based on the comparison of the main ion ratios with the aquifer stratigraphy was identified the fossil marine water mixed with meteoric water as the dominant genetic water type. The amount of meteoric water was found as a function of openness of the hydrogeologic structures. The bigger amounts of meteoric water caused the bigger diversity in chemical composition of the samples. This is dependent on the water-rock interactions in various rock types as well as other geo chemical processes.
