ABSTRACT: On October 23, 2000 the European Parliament and the Council adopted the Directive 2000/60/EC, the Water Framework Directive, hereafter referred to as the "WFD", establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy. This Directive forms the basic legislation for the protection of the European aquatic environment. One of the issues required by the "WFD" is to delineate adequate groundwater bodies on the territory of each member state to help the achievement of good groundwater status and to that end provides for the monitoring of groundwater bodies as well as measures to protect and restore groundwater. At present, three "Iayers" of groundwater bodies were delineated on Slovak territory, following the primary division of the 141 hydrogeological region s, sub-regions and partial regions for the first two layers. At first, layer of Quaternary sediments was generated, and the underlying layer of pre Quaternary groundwater bodies. Independent layer of geothermal waters was created beneath. Present sate will require more attitudes to cope with already delineated surface water bodies as well as to cope with future transboundary groundwater bodies' problem.
