ABSTRACT: Paper provides basic infonnation about stable isotopes of light elements behaviour in hydrosphere. As well few examples from isotope research of natural waters in Slovak territory are given. 10 years monitoring of oxygen isotope composition of precipitation shown usual pattem with increasing light isotope with rising altitude and during the winter. Sulphur in winter precipitation is terrestrial in origin with mean d34S - 4,7%. Karstic springs in Veľká Fatra mountains show mixing of three main sources of sulphur: upper Triassic schists, Lower Triassic schists and background sulphate, very similar to precipitation one. Altitudinal effect on oxygen isotopes were used for estimating altitude of recharge areas in this mountain range as well. Long tenn monitoring of isotope composition of Danube and Morava river confinns different river water origin. Every year light „Alps snow water“ peak presence in Danube water can serve as natural tracer of bank groundwater movement. 87Sr/86Sr ratio could be used for identification of aquifers as documented on geothermal waters in Popradská kotlina basin.
