ABSTRACT: The region of Spišská Magura Mts. is built of flysch rocks of the Innercarpathian Paleogene. Groundwater circulates mainly in near-surface zone and in tectonically predisposed fractured zones. The main factor controlling spatial distribution of permeability is the exponential decrease of mean permeability with depth. Increase of mean permeability in tested intervals of wells with increasing proportion of sandstones display s only at considerable predominance of sandstones. Waters of Na-HCO3 type in deeper parts of Paleogene contain high concentrations of H2S, NH4 and organic matter. Mean rate of groundwater recharge ranges to 1460 l/s e.i. 3.66 l/s/km2. Exploitable groundwater amount in Paleogene sediments was estimated at 94 l/s.
