ABSTRACT: One of the elementary requirements of the Nitrate Directive (Council Directive 91/676/EEC) is to delineate nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZ), i.e. to identify areas polluted by nitrates and/or at risk of pollution caused by nitrate from agricultural sources, for which it is necessary to establish and implement pollution mitigating programs to prevent and reduce pollution of water bodies. So far, this is the first review paper dealing with the evolution of nitrate vulnerable zones in Slovakia. This paper aims to, at least partially, clarify the historical aspects and the current status of nitrate vulnerable areas in Slovakia.
