ABSTRACT: The impact of plant protection products (PPPs) on groundwater quality in Slovakia is assessed herein. It is based on statistical analyses including trend identification in the consumption of PPPs’ active substances (AS). Available AS data was evaluated in districts, regions and nationally. Trend in PPPs’ AS consumption was calculated for the 2002 – 2012 period to evaluate the long-term evolution of PPPs applied in Slovakia. An increasing trend in applied AS was identified between 2009 and 2012. The highest average consumption of PPPs’ AS evaluated from 2005 to 2012 was documented in the regional areas of Nitra (0.92 kg·ha-1) and Trnava (0.89 kg·ha-1). The Nitra, Piešťany, Hlohovec and Šaľa districts recorded the highest long-term average consumption of PPPs from 2005 to 2012; with average AS consumption between 1.27 and 1.05 kg·ha-1 for total agricultural and forest areas, respectively. In 2012, the highest consumption of PPPs’ AS was documented for Piešťany, Hlohovec, Nitra, Šaľa, Senec and Nové Zámky districts at 1.15 to 1.57 kg·ha-1. The most significant potential impact on groundwater quality is expected for PPPs’ AS evaluated as relevant for groundwater pollution in Slovakia. Their occurrence in the groundwater was also documented related to groundwater quality monitoring.
