ABSTRACT: In the South-eastern Slovakia are located several important areas with good conditions for producing and using groundwater. The basic prerequisite is suitable geological conditions, South-eastern Slovakia has two major hydrogeological regions to with significant amount of groundwater: (1) in the north to south direction Vihorlat mountains, Neovolcanites contain groundwater resources of regional significance which supply drinking water to the Podvihorlatský water conduit and (2) south of this older Vihorlat mountain source are the important geological formations of Quaternary – fluvial sediments which are particularly significant in terms of groundwater quantity and especially quality. These are on the Laborec river north of Michalovce town. Although other Quaternary-fluvial sediments from localities such a Lastomír, Boťany, Pinkovce-Záhor, Lekárovce and Slovenské Nové Mesto, provide significant quantities of groundwater, they can be used for drinking-water without prior treatment.
