Water balance in partial watersheds of the tlstá hydrogeological structure

ABSTRACT: Water balance was calculated for 24 partial watersheds with total area of 211.8 km2 around the Tlstá hydrogeological structure, where Triassic dolomites and limestones outcrop on the area of 122.8 km2. Surface water runoff observations were available from 25 water gauging objects for 1989 and 1990 hydrological years. Previously, these data were only analysed to calculate groundwater resources for the whole area, but it was also possible to use it to estimate potential groundwater resources inside this large karstified groundwater body. Potential and actual evapotranspiration values were derived by Thornthwaite’s method and daily precipitation data from 5 stations, daily air temperature values from two stations and soil field capacity of 76.1 mm based on 58 soil samples in this area were utilised. Altitude was first averaged for each watershed, and then averaged for all watersheds in the area. This resulted in total average altitude of 883.4 m a.s.l. The groundwater-runoff-forming-potential was then compared with measured runoff values to estimate the hidden water exchange between partial
watersheds. The 4.7 km long Harmanecký railway tunnel is the dominant draining object in the area and while this substantially increases runoff from the relevant partial watershed, it also noticeably decreases runoff from the neighbouring watersheds. The difference between the estimated groundwaterrunoff-forming-potential and runoff measured from the entire evaluated area delivered maximum calculation error of 2.2 %. The mean value of the karstic groundwater runoff from the area was 435 mm (13.8 L∙s-1∙km-2) and the mean actual evapotranspiration values was 561 mm.
