ABSTRACT: Carpathian keuper sediments are a hydrogeologically interesting phenomenon in the Western Carpathians. This Upper Triassic formation composed of variegated shales, sandstones, dolomites and conglomerates is traditionally considered an aquiclude. Detailed documentation of springs in the central Slovak Veľká Fatra Mts. revealed the existence of 303 springs on the 22.489 km2 Carpathian keuper outcrop, with at least 118.76 L.s-1 total discharge. The Carpathian keuper sediments here are part of two tectonic units: the Tatric and the Veporic; with Veporic outcrops making up 90 % of the total outcrop area. The specific groundwater runoff here in the form of springs was 5.672 L.s-1.km-2, with higher value found only in Triassic limestones and dolomites and Jurassic radiolarites and radiolaritic limestones. Groundwater runoff is formed by numerous small springs, with 14 to 15 springs on each km2. This high density of springs and high groundwater runoff are due to the morphologic position of keuper sediments on the mountain ranges and slopes, and the sediments are easily affected by slope deformation processes because of their heterogeneity and plasticity. A network of discontinuities is created between the sliding blocks and this enhances deeper and more intensive groundwater circulation. When keuper sediments are in lower, geomorphologically depressed positions, they act as aquitards or aquicludes, and their contact with geomorphologically superimposed Triassic carbonates of both Tatric and Veporic units forms a barrier providing groundwater outlets in springs with significant discharges.
