ABSTRACT: The bacterial genus Aeromonas includes ubiquitous microorganisms occurring mainly in aquatic habitats. Many species cause diseases in animals, including humans. We focused on the occurrence of aeromonads as emerging pathogens in the waters of the Little Danube River, which are the main source of irrigation water of agricultural land Žitný ostrov. The waters are also used by private growers and for recreation, such as swimming and rafting. Water samples were collected at two intervals from 6 sampling points, to provide full covering of the river. A total of 53 isolates were identified by biochemical tests, of which 17 isolates belonged to the genus Aeromonas. Twelve strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila, three strains as Aeromonas caviae, one strain as Aeromonas encheleia and one strain as Aeromonas veronii.
