ABSTRACT: In the years 2019 and 2020, State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr carried out geological investigation of the environment of the Hlohovec – Vlčie Hory landfill. The aim of investigation was to realize a detailed geological survey of the environment and risk analysis of the contaminated area with a focus on water and rock contamination in the landfill and its surroundings and, if risks are identified, to propose remedial measures. The chemical composition of all samples of seepage and drainage waters and most groundwaters is significantly changed with a significant representation of substances of secondary origin. Landfill pollution is related to the occurrence of high contents of boron, Cl-, NO2 -, NH4+, and increased values of conductivity and total dissolved solids. Of the trace elements, As, Sb, Pb, Ni, Mo appear to be the most problematic. TOC and various pesticides, in particular atrazine, desethylatrazine, terbuthylazine, promethrin, terbutrin, simazine, propiconazole, s-metolachlor, appear to be the most problematic indicators among the organic substances. In the seepage and drainage waters of the landfill, contents exceeding IT values were also found for chlorinated hydrocarbons (1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethene, trichloromethane/chloroform, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol). On the other hand, no significant landfill pollution was found in the soil and rock environment. The results of the risk analysis showed that there is a risk of groundwater pollution spreading for chlorides, TOC, promethrin, terbutrin, atrazine, desethylatrazine. The risk calculations also confirmed the health risk for employees working in the landfill area. Results of investigation generally confirmed that remediation is required in the landfill area in order to eliminate environmental and health risks.
