ABSTRACT: The remediation of old environmental burdens is one of the main environmental issues at the present. The key principle of a successful remediation is the accuracy at delineation of contaminated areas. Evaluation of petroleum hydrocarbons content in soil could be used to identify the presence of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs), which denotes the maximal extent of contamination. This process can help to allocate LNAPL accumulations with greater accuracy and consequently plan locations of remediation wells. Paper is focused in evaluation of remediation results at three locomotive depots (LDs). Collected data include total petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in soil samples, LNAPL presence in remediation wells and the volume of the total LNAPL extracted. Mobile (hydraulically removable) part of LNAPL was assumed when the petroleum hydrocarbon content in soil was higher than 10,000 mg·kg-1. Paper deals with relations between LNAPL presence in wells and results of soil samples analyses. Clear connection between the occurrence of mobile LNAPL and the high content of contamination in soil has not been confirmed. The presence of LNAPL and high volumes were also removed from wells where the soil contamination was relatively low (below 5,000 mg·kg-1). In any case, the content of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil above 5,000 mg·kg-1 should be considered a high probability of LNAPL presence.
