ABSTRACT: Sudden unexpected changes in groundwater quality and quantity can potentially cause serious problems in the public drinking water supply. Therefore, identification of strategic ground water drinking resources available in emergency situations is an essential component of water management plans. This paper focuses on the chemical composition and groundwater quality to enable identification of strategic sources of drinking water in the Bratislavan self-governing region. The selected potential areas of strategic water sources are; (1) areas of the Danube river Quaternary sediments below Bratislava, at Žitný ostrov and the right bank of the Danube river, (2) the Malé Karpaty Mts. and adjacent part of the Záhorská nížina basin area and (3) the area of Devín – Devínska Nová Ves – although this latter area is not discussed in this paper. Although deterioration of groundwater quality has been noted in the upper part of the aquifer in Žitný ostrov and in the Danube right bank area due to its natural condition and anthropogenic activity, the deeper parts of this hydrogeological structure are characterized by very good groundwater quality. This area therefore has crucial significance due to the water current and its possible strategic use. The groundwater in the Malé Karpaty Mts. and adjacent part of the Záhorská nížina lowland area has very good quality in the aquifers of Mesozoic carbonates and Quaternary Aeolian sands, so it is perfect for strategic water supply analysis.
